How To Drive Traffic To Your Website | Using Keyword Research
Drive traffic to your website using keyword rich content was written for the newbie who is considering using content marketing or for the more experienced marketer who may not be getting the traffic they expected from their efforts.
I use Google’s free key word tool to find ideas for keywords and phrases. I also use Market Samurai to look at the competition strength and backlinks. Understanding keyword research is crucial for how you drive traffic to your website.
Content marketing can be described as giving your prospects the valuable content they are looking for to help them grow their business. When you consistently give value you will attract prospects to you.
There are many ways to drive traffic to your website.
Key words play a vital role in attracting your prospects and also help to drive traffic to your website.
If you miss this piece of the puzzle you might as well be whistling Dixie in the wind. No one will see or hear you. Here’s a video tutorial I made for you showing you my search for the perfect key word phrase. It was not an easy search but I finally found a phrase that had a good number of potential clicks with an acceptable level of competition.
I admit as a newbie one year ago I didn’t have a clue about how to drive traffic to my website and I was very intimidated by the tools for key word research. I struggled for the last year with key word research and felt like I would never learn how to do online marketing. I felt alone and I was struggling because I did not understand how to do this. It was a big problem for me.
I finally asked for help. I set up a coaching session with another online marketer I met in a master mind team. He asked me if I knew how to drive traffic to my website and my answer was No!
After my one hour coaching session the light bulb went on! I finally had some understanding of the process for key word research which will help me attract more traffic.
Moral of the story if you are struggling don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help.
Back to the subject of how to do online marketing!
Your goals in key word research are these:
- Drive traffic to your website
- understand what your prospects are looking for
- understand the role of keywords and why they are so important
- attract your market
- learn the words and phrases your market uses
The more you know about your target audience the better you can meet their needs, produce the content they are looking for and drive traffic to your website.
What you don’t want to do is guess at random words and hope for the best.
To begin this process, put yourself in your prospects place. What are they looking for? Ask the questions they would ask. Do a survey on Face book to find some of these questions. Talk to people you network with. Then brainstorm a list of words and phrases, study the list and eliminate those words and phrases that are not relevant.
I found this great website during my research on how to drive traffic to your website.
The way you drive traffic to your website is a process of study and implementing what you know. There are many ways to drive traffic to your website, key word research is just part of the story.
When you learn something new and them implement what you learn the next step is to share this with your audience. Becoming a teacher is part of becoming a leader.
Sharing and teaching helps you the marketer understand the information better and also commits you to the process.
What I learned in the last year is this, keyword research is not a simple thing. There are several areas you must understand and look at when deciding which word or phrase to use. There are some great tools you can learn how to use to make your key word research much easier. Don’t take a risk by not doing your keyword research, it is a vital part of ranking on Google.
The internet is a vast ocean and we as marketers need to learn how to navigate so we can be found.

Hi Tonya
Great post!
First congratulations for the video, you are going to rock in 2013 with your video series for sure. I appreciate the voice quality as well, I couldn’t feel any noise. The gadgets you are using for the video appear to be awesome.
Thanks for sharing this.
Sapna
Hi Sapna,
Thank you for your great comments on my video. You know it’s funny about the voice quality. I’m using my ear plug and mic from my smart phone. It’s pretty good right?
I also use Snagit for the on screen capture. It’s from Tech Smith the same company that has Jing. My equipment is not anything fancy, so glad it’s coming across with good quality. That’s good to know, thank you.
More to come…( :
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
I must admit I need to pay more attention to keyword research – I just don’t enjoy it very much! I have Market Samurai but haven’t use it for absolutely ages – you’re making me think I should get it out the cupboard and dust it off. I find it frustrating and limiting having to build articles and headlines around keywords, which don’t always fit with the way I want to express myself.
Your video was very clear and helpful, though, and you’ve convinced me I need to give this subject a bit more consideration – thank you!
Sue
Hi Sue,
I know exactly how you feel about Market Samurai…because I felt the same way. I finally broke down and asked for help from one of the guys in a Master Mind group I’m in. He has fantastic traffic coming to him blog and videos. I spent one hour on Skype with him ( he lives in Chile) and began to understand what I needed…it has changed the way I produce my content. The keywords you use are so crucial to bringing traffic to your site.
Glad I convinced you to brush off the dust on your MS software…don’t let it intimidate you. Once you learn how…it’s really fun!
Tonya
Thanks for sharing an article for those of us who aren’t SEO gurus. I think that I’ve gained more insight from this article and the video than from any other single source I’ve seen.
Hi Frank,
Welcome to my site…your comments almost brought tears to my eyes! I hope you watched the video as well because I went through the process step by step.
LOL I am not an SEO Guru either but just determined to learn how to do the things you must know in order to get to that first page of Google!
It’s all about traffic.
Thank you so much for your great comments.
Hope to see you again soon,
Tonya
Tonya, Keyword research has been the hardest thing for me. Thank you for your post.
Hi Donna,
I know what you mean! A year ago I had no clue. I knew it was important but everytime I tried to find a good keyword I would get very confused. I made it my passion to figure this out.
I’m saying I’m an expert but keyword research is now FUN for me! I really enjoy it. If you’re doing content marketing you really have to know what to use for your key words!
Thanks for your great comments.
Hope to see you again soon.
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
I love your video! You’re setting off a bunch of light bulbs for me. I need to learn about creating videos. This is crucial for marketing your products this year & into the future.
As for keywords, I do need to focus on them more. It is a viable source for traffic to your sites.
There are others, but that’s a discussion for another time.
Thanks again Tonya!
George

Hi Tonya,
Thank you for the little push you have given me to do keyword research. I know – I know I’ve learned it before, but I haven’t paid attention to it.
But this makes perfect sense! Now all I need to do is apply it lol.
Your video is fantastic. You are a pro my friend. You have made it so easy to do and I thank you.
Donna
Hi Donna,
Sweet! Thank you so much for the great comments. This is what it’s all about, helping each other….I admit keyword research for me a year ago was totally frustrating. Now it’s fun!
I wanted to keep it simple and just show what I do. So happy you got the value I was trying to deliver.
Thanks again!
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
A great post on keyword research you’ve just written here. Just like you said, understanding the concepts of keyword research can be a very difficult task especially for newbies.
There are a lot to learn in order to be really good at it and your video is really good, and I’m sure it will be of help to many new bloggers who doesn’t understand the tips.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Theordore,
Welcome to my blog!
Thank you so much for your great comment on my video. Producting more videos is a goal for me this year. What better way to explain keyword research than with a video?
I really apprciate you taking the time to read and watch my content.
It is my hope that somebody who needs to learn keyword research finds this valuable.
I know when I was learning I needed a lot of help!
Hope to see you again soon,
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
While I’ve done lots and lots of keyword research in the past it has always annoyed the heck out of me. Don’t ask me why, I don’t exactly know
just does!
Nowadays, however, while I still try to have a lead keyword phrase I don’t worry too much about it, as I am not creating real marketing campaigns as I used to in the past for my niche blogs.
This is an excellent post, however, for whoever needs to understand better what keyword research is all about and why it’s important to be found.
Hi Sylvianne,
I know exactly what you mean because I felt the very same way until I began to understand the tools I use.
I have a question. Do you get to a point where you have enough traffic you don’t have to worry to much about the SEO stuff? I know Ray Higdon says he never does keyword searching and he has a million hits a month (or some astronomical #) to his blog every month.
That would be great!
As for me I still an edge to get out there and be found and keywords is one part of that puzzle.
Thanks for your great comments,
Tonya
Yes, Tonya, that’s right.
When I used to have my niche blogs as an affiliate marketer I wasn’t promoting “me” but the products, so then I counted more on keywords to drive traffic to my blogs.
However, now I mostly promote me “the freelance writer”, “the life coach” or even “the the expert about France”. I get most of my traffic by referrals, and I understand that you have to build relationships FIRST in order to get the type of clients that I get, so keywords are not my first priority anymore.
I totally understand how the guy you mentioned get all his traffic based on his name and reputation alone. Yes, after a while you don’t need to worry too much about keyword. Being just a bit conscious of would be enough.
Hi Sylvianne,
Thank you for answering my question. That is a great place to be in! It is a goal to work toward. I also use the keyword research tools for You Tube..which is a whole other subject.
One more question…how long did it take to get the organic traffic?
Have a great day.
Tonya
To get organic traffic without really thinking about keywords it took me about a year.
Now, I still want more traffic, of course (we always do) but I am not really obsessing with keywords for that. My name alone is my BEST keyword, because it’s so unique. That’s why I promote me now
Hi Syvianne,
Thanks for answering my question! You got it…Brand Yourself! Love that!
much appreciation!
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
This is a great post Tonya and you are kicking butts with your video my friend.
I love how you give it time to do the keyword research. I have to admit that it is not something I like to do but I do it anyway but I know I need to learn more about it. You really explain it well here and I will try to follow the steps you mentioned.
Thanks for such a great post Tonya and keep it up with your videos. You really did a very good job.
Be Blessed,
Neamat
Hi Neamat,
Thank you for your great comments!
I admit keyword research was one of the things I really avoided because I couldn’t understand the tools. I understood why I needed a good keyword but not the technique for finding them.
My first 6 months blogging I guessed at my keywords. Now that I had some coaching I really enjoy finding good keywords…it’s a whole different game.
My video….I had to make this video at least 3 times…there were many technical problems and everytime I thought I had it something else would be evident. Finally I said OK I’m gonna make this one more time and what ever happens, happens. So I”m glad to hear you liked it.
Thanks again see you soon,
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
This was an extremely helpful post! I have been doing keyword research for a while, and it’s a ton of work, but very worthwhile in the end.
I LOVED your video. I think I’ll watch again and see if I can get a few more golden nuggets from it. It really was good, nice job!
Thanks for this post and great info!
Jess
Hi Jess,
Thank you for loving my video. It all starts with the keywords. I know some of the bloggers are not as concerned because they have a huge audience already with organic traffic but for me it is important to attract my niche. It’s also extremely important for You Tube to check out the competition and choose a great keyword.
Just curious, Have you been using Market Samurai in your keyword research?
See you soon,
Tonya
Hi again, Tonya,
I use the google keyword tool and I “try” to use Market Samurai. I don’t fully understand how to use. I need more training on that. I understand it’s a very powerful tool, so it’s definitely on my “to-do” list.
I was also use SEOmoz for a short time and really liked it, but it’s so darn expensive I had to cancel my subscription.
Hope you’re having a great day!
Jess
HI Jess,
That’s exactly why I wanted to do this blog post…I finally learned how to use Market Samurai, like I said I had it for a year and couldn’t figure it out…I watched those darn videos at least 6 times! Then I learned how to use it…it has made a huge difference now it’s fun. If you need help let me know.
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
Great post and thanks for sharing the information.I am using Google adwords from when i have started blogging. But i was totally unaware of Market Samurai. The tool seems to have value i ill surely try this one.
Thank You
Shorya Bist
From Youthofest
Hi Shorya,
Thank you for your great comments!
Market Samurai shows you the competition and the strength of the competition, without it you don’t have the whole picture on your keyword.
It also can do many other things and there are great tutorials to teach you….I can’t live with it!
You can also use it for You Tube marketing, which I do.
I happy you learned something because that was my goal!
Have a great day!
Tonya
Hi Tonya,
Good to be on your blog today and reading some exciting content. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment on my blog in the first place.
Now, Keyword research has always been an issue to starters. Unfortunately it cannot be skipped. If you do without it, you keep dancing on the spot or maybe rely on referral traffic.
I believe the most targeted type of traffic than can easily be converted into leads and sales is search engine traffic and this comes from proper keyword research.
Thanks for such value. I hope to be here again for another exciting read
Hi Enstine,
Welcome to my blog!
Glad to see you agree with me Enstine on the keyword search point. For me at this point in my laptop career it is a must to know the strength of my competition and insure I have a chance to rank on Google…we have to keep Google happy! Right? ( :
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit!
Hope to see you again soon,
Tonya
Hi Tonya
I loved your video, well done, it is something I have been thinking about doing for ages now, I feel like I do not like the sound of my own voice!!
I do not spend as much time or effort on Keyword Research as I should, your post has made me sit and think that I need to get off my butt and start learning more about this, so thanks for sharing…
Have a great day
pauline
Hi Pauline,
Thank you for taking the time to watch the video tutorial I’m glad you liked it!
I’m sure you would be great in your own video, we are always so critical of ourselves but honestly video becomes addictive especially when you start getting leads from them.
My post stirred a lot of thinking from a few other people, so you are not alone. It can be tedious but with the right tools it really is kinda fun!
At least now that I understand it better….( :
See you soon,
Tonya
